Human Intervention Motivation Study (HIMS) is a program that helps pilots that are suffering from alcohol or drug abuse. The program has been around in the United States (US) for nearly 40 years and has helped thousands of pilots return to work, who may otherwise have had their employment terminated. VIPA has been engaged in a proposal to introduce the program into Australia and has actively supported the concept. The structure of the HIMS program is currently being developed by interested parties which include unions, CASA and the airlines. Not surprisingly, Australia has some unique legislation surrounding this issue in the form of DAMP testing which has presented some challenges. Unlike the US, the companies in Australia will run the program with oversight by CASA and the unions. VIPA has had some concerns in relation to the reporting of perceived alcohol or drug abuse and how such reports would be dealt with by the company and CASA. There is a large amount of material on the internet about this topic and all pilots are encouraged to research this material. If you have any questions please emailsafety@vipa.asn.au and your HIMS representative will be only too pleased to answer your query. Importantly, if you, a family member, or perhaps a friend has identified that you have an alcohol or drug dependency issue then please consider calling the VIPA Peer Support helpline on 1800 116460.
